Juniors

September-October

• Sign up for college presentations this fall to learn about campuses from admission representatives.   Students can sign up for visits from colleges in Naviance, under colleges tab.
• Attend Junior/Senior College Info night, scheduled for September 16. Time: TBD
• PSAT will be offered on Saturday, October 16. Registration details to follow in September.
• MDUSD Virtual College Fair is scheduled for September 28. Registration details to follow.
• Attend Career Education Fair on October 20. More information to follow this fall.
• Sign up for class of 2024 Remind to keep updated on college & career news: text @2024foru to 81010
• Concentrate on your first-semester courses. Grades in your courses count!
• Join a club on campus or a community service group to build your volunteer experience.

 

November-December

• Research careers and the training you will need to enter the job. Log into Naviance and complete Strengths Explorer to find out about your emerging talents.  Complete the Career Cluster Finder to research career areas. Finish completing the Career Interest Profiler to find out which careers are a good fit for you, based on your answers. Take some time to investigate careers to help you think about majors or training you will need.
• Start generating your future college list based on majors in which you are interested. Use SuperMatch in Naviance as a college search tool.

 

January-March

• Look into registering for SAT or ACT in spring if you are applying to a college that requests the exam for admission. Note: UCs and CSUs are now test-free and do not require an SAT or ACT for admission.  Check the college website for policies on private or out of state institutions.
• Continue to work on your college list or post high school plan.
• Make sure you are on track with your A-G requirements as you complete course cards for your senior year. Remember, colleges are looking to see that you are choosing classes that challenge yourself. Meet with your counselor or Mrs. Bergum if you are not sure about which courses to take.
• Curious about how much federal aid you might qualify for? Use the Federal Student Aid Calculator to get an idea of your Expected Family Contribution (EFC): https://studentaid.gov/aid-estimator/

 

April-June

• Study for AP exams- Testing is during the first two weeks of May.
• Sign up and take the SAT or ACT in the spring/summer so you can concentrate on college applications in the fall. *See note above on testing requirements
• Visit colleges during spring break, or visit virtually if in-person visits are not available.
• Your college application will include spring grades of your junior year, so make them count!
• Finalize your college list or post high school plan.
• Complete the CHS Personal Data form in Naviance, under “About Me” tab. This will be used by teachers/counselors when they write letters of recommendation for you.
• Plan to visit colleges in the summer.

Self-Discovery Tab

• Take the Strengths Explorer to identify your areas of strength. This will help you to research careers that focus on your emerging strengths and skills.
• Take the Career Cluster Survey to find out which career areas are interesting.
• Take the Career Interest Profiler to discover possible careers that fit you.

Career Tab

• Visit Road Trip Nation and Explore Careers and Clusters to research careers.
• For additional Career/Occupational searches, go to Home page and look under links to find Occupational information, Bureau of Labor statistics and apprenticeship information.

WHY EXPLORE CAREERS? After researching careers and finding the education necessary to work in the field you are interested, you will have a better idea of which major or training program you would like to explore.

Colleges Tab

• Use SuperMatch to find colleges that meet your search criteria. Make sure to add your GPA and SAT or ACT scores if you have them.

About Me Tab

• Begin to fill out the CHS Personal Data Form, under “About Me tab>surveys>surveys from your school” listing activities, awards and other information. Teachers and counselors will use this information in your form to write letters of recommendation for colleges that request them, or for scholarships you apply to. 
• Check out the Resume tool. Use this template to create your personal resume. You may need a resume for a part-time job!
