Junior Overview Calendar

September-October

  • Sign up for college presentations this fall to learn about campuses from admission representatives. Check for presentations in weekly announcements. 
  • Attend College/Career Info Night for 11 and 12 grade families on September 12 at 6:30 pm.
  • Attend Career Education Fair on October 16. More information to follow this fall.
  • Attend MDUSD College Fair at Ygnacio Valley High school on October 24. Time TBD
  • PSAT will be offered in October, dates TBD. Registration details in August. 
  • Sign up for class of 2026 Remind to keep updated on college & career news: text @2026foru to 81010
  • Concentrate on your first-semester courses. Grades in your courses count!
  • Join a club on campus or a community service group to build your volunteer experience.

November-December

  • Research careers and the training you will need to enter the job. Log into CaliforniaColleges.edu to explore the career search tool. Finish completing the Interest Profiler to find out which careers are a good fit for you, based on your answers.  Take some time to investigate careers to help you think about majors or training you will need.
  • Visit colleges during winter break...step on campus and take a tour, or plan to visit virtually!

January-March

  • Start generating your future college list based on majors in which you are interested. Use college and major search tools in CaliforniaColleges.edu to help you create your list.
  • Register for the SAT or ACT in spring if you are applying to a college that requests the exam for admission. Note: UCs and CSUs are now test-free and do not require an SAT or ACT for admission.  Check the college website for policies on private or out of state institutions.
  • Make sure you are on track with your A-G requirements as you complete course cards for your senior year. Remember, colleges are looking to see that you are choosing classes that challenge yourself and do well in them. Colleges require a "C" or higher. Check your academic planner in CaliforniaColleges.edu to stay on track! Meet with your counselor or Mrs. Bergum if you are not sure about which courses to take.
  • Curious about how much federal aid you might qualify for? Use the Federal Student Aid Calculator to get an idea of your Student Aid Index (SAI): studentaid.gov/aid-estimator/

April-June

  • Continue to work on your college list or post high school plan.
  • Study for AP exams- Testing is during the first two weeks of May.
  • Sign up and take the SAT or ACT in the spring/summer so you can concentrate on college applications in the fall. *See note above on testing requirements
  • Visit colleges during spring break, or visit virtually if in-person visits are not available.
  • Your college application will include spring grades of your junior year, so make them count!
  • Finalize your college list or post high school plan.
  • Complete the Senior Brag Sheet for Letters of Recommendation. This will be used by teachers/counselors when they write letters of recommendation for you.
  • Plan to visit colleges in the summer.

WHY EXPLORE CAREERS?

 California Colleges.edu career assessments help you to think about your interests and emerging skills. You learn about  your strengths and preferences or the areas to focus on to reach your goals. Some career assessment results connect you to careers that might interest you. Others give tips to help you in school. After researching careers and finding the education necessary to work in the field you are interested, you will have a better idea of which major or training program you would like to explore.

 

Colleges 

  • Use major search tool to search colleges by major. You can choose California schools, or all schools that have the major you want to research. 
  • Use college search tool to search for colleges. You can search by type, size, or other criteria to build a list of results that you can research further. 

Degrees and Certificates

  • You can learn about different degrees and certificates under the college tab. Click on major and degree options under the college tab to find this information.

Log into CaliforniaColleges.edu through Classlink and your chrome book log in credentials!
