How to Get to College (English/Spanish)

9th Grade College/Career Planning

Welcome to high school! You are about to embark on a four-year journey that will prepare you to enter your choice of college/career training program, or acquire the skills needed to enter the world of work. Whatever your plans, use what you learn in high school to gain skills and knowledge so that you have a lot of options after you graduate. High school years go by quickly...you are here to learn and grow as a person, on your way to life after you graduate! With this idea in mind, know that learning counts, and grades count, too.

Use these guidelines to help you navigate your freshman year at CHS:

  • Take challenging courses and do well in them. Grades count, and will help your college application. The better you do in your classes, the more options you will have as you think about where you want to attend/what kind of training you need after high school. Check out A-G requirements to be college and career ready! Colleges accept grades of "C" and higher for admission.
  • Explore CaliforniaColleges.edu.  This is the year to start looking at different careers and training for them. Log into CaliforniaColleges.edu through Classlink and your chrome book login credentials.
  • Visit the College & Career Center webpage to check out all the resources available to you!
  • Check in with Mrs. Bergum and your counselor at least 1 time each semester so we can help you think about your options after high school.
  • Talk with your family about college plans so there is a clear idea of what they can afford. Having this discussion will help you with your college planning.
  • Join a club or activity on campus or in the community that you are interested in. It will enrich your high school experience, helping you to meet new friends and will also help you explore your interests! Look for club rush in the fall, organized by leadership class!

Questions? Contact me at bergums@mdusd.org or make an appointment on the College & Career webpage. I am happy to meet via Zoom or in-person. You can also stop by at brunch or lunch for quick questions in the College & Career Center, located in the library building.

 See you soon! Mrs. Bergum
